heifers

Classes and order of judging:  Herefords, Angus, Shorthorn, Simmental, Limousin, Chinaina, Maine-Anjou, Commercials.  There must be 3 heifers to make a breed or heifers will be shown in AOB class.

Heifers will be tagged with tamper-proof ear tags containing identification micro-chips.  NO Heifers will be allowed to be nominated as AOB ("All Other Breed").  AOB classes will be reserved for those heifers with appropriate breed registration with less than 3 head of that breed.  Those heifers without appropriate breed registration papers will be shown as commercial.  Heifers must be born after January 1 two years prior to show.  To enter the purebred classes, original registration papers must be in the exhibitor's full name, and must be presented to the superintendent at time of show.  No previous Grand Champion Heifer of Carter County Livestock Show will be eligible in this year's Carter County Livestock Show.  The superintendent will divide classes by age.

Check with Vo-Ag Teacher and/or Extension Educator for nomination dates.

Market hogs

Classes and order of judging:  Berkshire, Chester White, Duroc, Hampshire, Poland China, Spots, Yorkshire, Other Breeds and Crosses.

Hogs must weigh between 220 and 280 pounds.  Lightweight classes will be weighed to insure lighter hogs will be within 10 lbs. of bottom of class.  All breeds will be divided into 3 classes by weight, not to exceed 12 per class, then superintendent will divide classes accordingly.  All breeds with less than 9 will be divided into at least 2 classes.  Showmanship will follow the Grand and Reserve Champion judging.  The judge will pick premium sale order.  Exhibitors will turn in own weights.  There will be a 10 pound weigh-back from heaviest in class.  Top 5 places will be weighed.  All hog entries must be submitted to Gary Scott on or before January 9 of each year.  No entries will be accepted after January 9.  Pseudo-rabies test results are due to Gary Scott no later than February 14.

market lambs

Classes and order of judging:  Hampshire, Southdown, Dorset, Suffolk, Shropshire, Natural, Other Breeds and Crosses.

Sheep will have official weigh-in from 8:00 - 9:00 am on Wednesday of show week.  There will be no weigh back during the show.  All breeds will be divided into 3 classes by weight, not to exceed 15 per class, then the superintendent will divide classes accordingly.  All breeds with less than 9 will be divided into 2 classes.  All breeds with less than 4 will show in one class*.  Showmanship will follow the Grand and Reserve Champion judging.  The judge will pick premium sale order.  All lambs must be slicked sheered to be eligible to show.  No more than 1 week wool growth.  30% or more blue, excluding wool pickers, must be shown as natural.  All Ewes must have scrapies tags in place.

*Sheep will have a minimum weight to show at the spring weigh-in of 90 pounds.
*Sheep will be classified by officials as to breed.

Market Steers

Classes and order of judging:  Herefords, Angus, Shorthorn, Other Breeds and Crosses.

All breeds will be divided as equitable as possible by weight, not to exceed 15 per class, then the superintendent will divide classes accordingly.  All breeds with less than 9 will be divided into 2 classes.  Showmanship will follow the Grand and Reserve Champion judging.  The judge will pick premium sale order.  There must be 3 steers of Hereford, Angus or Shorthorn to establish a breed.  If less than 3 Hereford, Angus or Shorthorn are entered they will be combined with one another as "British Breeds."  Steers will have a minimum weight to show at the spring weigh-in of 1,000 pounds.

market meat goats

All breeds and sexes show together, divided into classes by weight.  Showmanship will follow the Grand and Reserve Grand judging.  The judge will pick sale order.

market wether & doe regulations

  1. Identification.  A nomination tag will be applied at time of nomination.  Does must also have scrapies tag.
  2. Horns.  Dehorning of goats in this show is not suggested; however, horns should be tipped and rounded.  Goats with horns sharper than deemed safe by the show superintendent or fair staff will be required to be tipped or rounded or isolated and not shown.
  3. Weight.  Minimum weight requirement for market wethers and does is 50 pounds.  There will be official weigh-in of market wethers and does.
  4. Weight Classes.  The superintendent will determine the number of classes based on entries.
  5. Grooming.  Artificial coloring, paint and powder are not permitted for use in the market wether division and doe during the show.
  6. Bracing.  Bracing of animals will not be tolerated and result in dismissal by the judge or superintendent.  The animal must have all four feet on the ground.  Animals must be shown with a collar used only to control the animal.  Exhibitor can only transiently touch the animal with his body.  Exhibitor cannot use the collar to make the animal tense his muscles.  Any violation will result in dismissal.

Steer Program Criteria

  1. Open to all steers exhibited at the Carter County Jr. Livestock Show.  Steers need not be "county-bred."
  2. All exhibitors wishing to enter their steers in the Carter County Carcass Contest will be required to pay a $50.00 nomination fee by 6:30 pm on Friday March 2, 2007.  Moneys from nomination fees will be used to enhance cash awards, nomination costs and other incidental costs which may be incurred.
  3. Steers must be weighed at the official Carter County weigh-in held the previous fall.
  4. There will be no maximum weight at the fall nomination but there will be a 1,000 pound minimum at the official spring weigh-in.  The final and official weight to be used for the Carcass Contest will be taken before the steers are loaded for slaughter, not at the Jr. Livestock Show.
  5. All steers participating in the Carcass Contest will be delivered to the Noble Foundation by the specified date.
  6. Premiums will be paid to the top 20 percent of the entries.
  7. Steers will be indexed and ranked on "overall" merit based on the following criteria:
    60% Carcass
    25% Performance (ADG)
    15% Live placing (premium sale order)
  8. Only "overall" moneys will be paid, no moneys will be paid on Carcass, Average Daily Gain, or Live placings.
  9. Steers will be subject to all other rules and regulations of the Carter County Junior Livestock Show and the Noble Foundation Carcass Contest.
  10. Violation of rules may disqualify exhibitor from future participation in the carcass program.
  11. Performance data will be made available to the judge during the steer show.
