SOIL - FORAGE - WATER TESTING

The Soil, Water, and Forage Analytical Laboratory (SWFAL), located in the basement of Agriculture Hall at OSU, was established to meet the soil, plant, and water quality testing needs of farmers, ranchers, homeowners, and consultants throughout the state. The laboratory provides fast, accurate analyses and reliable service, so the data obtained from testing can be used as a guide to good soil and crop production management. The tests have been developed to assist producers in areas such as fertilizer requirements, forage quality, water quality, and soil salinity management.

Soil Testing - Soil tests provide a scientific basis for evaluating available plant nutrients in cropland, pastures, lawns, and gardens. Analyses of soil samples can help farmers and homeowners fine-tune nutrient applications from fertilizers, biosolids, and animal manure. Properly managing the amount of nutrients added to the soil can save money and protect the environment.
Forage Testing - Forages furnish essential energy, proteins, vitamins, minerals, and fibers in livestock diets. Many factors (e.g. variety, maturity, growing conditions, handling practices, etc.) affect forage quality prior to the time it is fed. As a result, predicting forage quality values from standard books often grossly overestimates or underestimates feeding value. A better way to determine feeding value is to have a representative forage sample tested by a laboratory that uses proven and accepted methods of forage analysis.
Water Testing - The water test identifies the suitability of water for irrigation, livestock drinking water, or rural household use. (SWFAL does not analyze water for bacteria, pesticides, lead, or other heavy metals; therefore, drinking water should be analyzed by a state-certified laboratory that can test these constituents.)
